1st National Muslim-Indigenous Solidarity Conference

On January 25-26, 2025, the Islamic Social Services Association (ISSA) proudly hosted the 1st National Muslim-Indigenous Solidarity Conference in Winnipeg, MB. This historic gathering brought together diverse voices from Muslim and Indigenous communities to engage in deep, meaningful discussions on reconciliation, justice, and solidarity.

Over the course of two days, leaders, scholars, activists, and community members came together to address shared histories, ongoing struggles, and the path forward. Our sessions explored the legacy of colonialism, racial profiling in the justice system, gender-based violence, the significance of treaties, spiritual resilience, and the impact of assimilation policies. Through these conversations, we amplified voices, built bridges, and strengthened allyship between two communities with long-standing histories of resilience and resistance.

We were deeply honored to have The Honourable Bernadette Smith, Minister of Housing, Addictions, and Homelessness, and MLA Leah Gazan among our distinguished speakers, alongside powerful panelists, community leaders, and knowledge keepers. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to our Program Committee—Diane Redsky, Dr. Sandra DeLaronde, and Dr. Shahina Siddiqui—our facilitators, volunteers, and all participants who made this conference a space of healing, learning, and action.

This transformative event was made possible through the generous support of The Winnipeg Foundation (via the Truth and Reconciliation Project) and Canadian Heritage. Their commitment to reconciliation and cross-cultural dialogue has empowered us to continue this essential work.

As we move forward, we recognize that solidarity is not a moment but a movement. The conversations started here will continue as we work towards justice, inclusion, and systemic change. We remain committed to learning from each other, uplifting marginalized voices, and ensuring that the next generations have the courage to speak up and shape a more equitable future.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on this journey. We look forward to continuing this work, together.
